This Thursday, against Antwerp, Olympiakos starts its Europa League campaign in the skin of a team from pot 1. But with a mixed summer, and facing a Belgian formation that strongly resembles the trap team par excellence, the outcome of this fixture may already prove decisive for the teams European future.
The music is not as beautiful. Nor is the symbol. The prize money is much less. Less attractive, too. But whatever: the Europa League remains a European Cup, and as such, Olympiakos will approach this competition with the ambition that goes with it. That, in this case, of a team placed in pot 1, and which will therefore aim for direct qualification for the round of 16.
That’s that for the overall perspective. As for the upcoming visit of Antwerp, however, the situation is a little less rosy. The summer which has just passed was painful on the Greek side, with adverse impacts: injuries (Tiquinho, Fortounis), elimination from the Champions League qualifiers on penalties, Covid cases, needs in certain positions that remain despite two months of the transfer window, and a sluggish start to the championship against Atromitos (0-0).
The Frey threat
Difficult, then, not to see this fixture against Bjorn Engels and his teammates as a turning point, already, in this group stage. Hailed as a weaker team compared to Fenerbahçe and Frankfurt, Antwerp currently lies in twelfth position in the Belgian league, with eight points in six games. Nothing fantastic in terms of points on the board, but with the rhythm they’ve accumulated compared to Pedro Martins' men and their one Superleague game played, this could be a match where fitness could prove an important factor going into the game.
In addition, the Belgian team is rather young (average age 25), but there are some well-known names on the European stage: that of Radja Nainggolan, who returned to Belgium this summer after several years in Italy and in the Belgian national team, but also Samatta, on loan from Fenerbahçe, Viktor Fischer, former Ajax talent, and even Johannes Eggestein, whom Football Manager fans probably know. But the main threat, undoubtedly, will come from Michaël Frey, already scorer of 8 goals this season after a complicated time with ... Fenerbahçe, another opponent in Group D.
A point to prove
On the Olympiakos side, even if there are still 15 points up for grabs following Thursaday’s meeting, several issues will be scrupulously scrutinized during this encounter. Already, “flashy” recruits like Henry Onyekuru or Rony Lopes, to speak only of the offensive side, are under the microscope (and Tiquinho too, to a lesser extent). After all, they were recruited for these kinds of fixtures. Those which count and which get the fans excited, unlike a trip to Lamia or Panetolikos. Then, the “veterans” like Valbuena or El Arabi must also find a little energy, especially the second, to offer again a little magic.
But the one who will have the most pressure, no doubt, is Pedro Martins. The Portuguese coach, who has alternated tactical schemes and tinkered with player choices, must raise the bar by offering, if possible, this clear and flawless victory that many are waiting for in this 2021-2022 season which is only just getting started. And with a large squad at his disposal, there is no doubt he will suffer a few headaches when it comes to establishing his starting XI. Because the room for maneuver already appears to be reduced.
Olympiakos-Antwerp : déjà un tournant ?
Ce jeudi, face à Antwerp, l’Olympiakos démarre sa campagne de Ligue Europa dans la peau d’une équipe du pot 1. Mais avec un été en demi-teinte, et face à une formation belge qui ressemble fort à l’équipe piège par excellence, l’issue de la rencontre peut déjà être déterminante.
La musique n’est sans doute pas aussi belle. Ni aussi symbolique. Le prize-money, lui, est largement plus mince. Moins attrayant, aussi. Mais qu’importe : la Ligue Europa reste la coupe d’Europe, et à ce titre, l’Olympiakos abordera cette compétition avec l’ambition qui va avec. Celle, en l’occurrence, d’une équipe placée dans le pot 1, et qui visera donc la qualification directe pour les huitièmes de finale.
Voilà pour le panorama global. En ce qui concerne cette réception d’Antwerp, en revanche, la situation est un peu moins idyllique. L’été qui vient de s’écouler fut pénible côté grec, avec des événements contraires : blessures (Tiquinho, Fortounis), élimination de la LDC aux tirs au but, cas de Covid, des besoins persistants à certains postes malgré deux mois de mercato, et une entame de championnat poussive face à l’Atromitos (0-0).
La menace Frey
Difficile, alors, de ne pas voir cette affiche face à Bjorn Engels et les siens comme un tournant, déjà, dans cette phase de poules. Présentée comme l’équipe la plus abordable par rapport à Fenerbahçe et Francfort, Antwerp ne pointe qu’à la douzième place de son championnat, avec huit points en six journées. Rien de fantastique comptablement, mais le rythme accumulé, par rapport aux hommes de Pedro Martins et leur seul match de Superleague disputé, peut avoir son mot à dire. En outre, l’effectif belge est plutôt jeune (25 ans de moyenne d’âge au global), mais on y retrouve quelques noms bien connus à l’échelle européenne : celui de Radja Nainggolan, revenu cet été au pays après plusieurs années en Italie et en sélection belge, mais aussi Samatta, prêté par Fenerbahçe, Viktor Fischer, ancienne promesse de l’Ajax, et même Johannes Eggestein, que les amateurs de Football Manager connaissent probablement. Mais la principale menace, assurément, viendra de Michaël Frey, déjà auteur de 8 buts cette saison après un passage compliqué… à Fenerbahçe, autre adversaire de l’Olympiakos.
Des réponses à donner
Côté Olympiakos, même s’il restera encore 15 points à prendre à l’issue de la rencontre, plusieurs éléments de réponse seront scrupuleusement scrutés sur cette rencontre. Déjà, les recrues “clinquantes” comme Henry Onyekuru ou Rony Lopes, pour ne parler que du secteur offensif, sont attendues au tournant (et Tiquinho aussi, dans une moindre mesure). Après tout, ils ont été recrutés pour ce genre d’affiches. Celles qui comptent et qui marquent les esprits, contrairement à un déplacement à Lamia ou au Panetolikos. Ensuite, les “tauliers” type Valbuena ou El Arabi doivent aussi retrouver un peu d’allant, surtout pour le second d’ailleurs, pour offrir à nouveau un peu de magie.
Mais celui qui aura le plus la pression, sans doute, est Pedro Martins. Le technicien portugais, qui a alterné les schémas tactiques mais surtout les choix douteux, doit redresser la barre en offrant, si possible, cette victoire nette et sans bavure que beaucoup attendent sur cette saison 2021-2022 qui ne fait que démarrer. Et avec l’effectif large dont il dispose, nul doute qu’il doit souffrir de quelques maux de têtes au moment d’établir son onze de départ. Car la marge de manœuvre, déjà, apparaît comme réduite.
